SPICELAND — For the second time in less than two years, this small town has grown by annexing property adjacent to existing corporate limits.
The town council met in special session Tuesday and on a vote of 5-0 passed Ordinance 2015-5, which annexes the Woods Edge Drive subdivision on the northwest side of town. The area involved consists of 13.577 acres. The annexed area is assigned to Spiceland Council District Ward 1. The council previously passed a fiscal plan required by the state.
Town attorney Tracy Newhouse explained that statute calls for a 30 day judicial review period. If there are no legal issues or challenges, the annexation takes effect Nov. 2.
Woods Edge Drive residents approached the council earlier this year and asked to be annexed, explaining they wanted the town to blacktop the gravel road, take care of snow removal during the winter months, and maintain the road throughout the year. They were instructed to draft a petition requesting annexation and have property owners in the subdivision sign it. They did so, obtaining signatures from 100 percent of those involved. The council followed up by creating a fiscal plan and drafting the ordinance approved this week.
“This was an easy annexation because everyone in the neighborhood was in favor of it, which made it a lot easier for us,” Council President Darrin Jacobs said. “We’re glad to have them. They were already part of the community and we’re glad to now have them as part of the town. We look forward to serving them.”
