LIBERTY — When Union County Sheriff Dale Dishmond campaigned last fall, he said he got a clear message from voters: Do something about the drugs.

After nine months in office, Dishmond has a stack of felony arrest warrants for drug trafficking that he could serve, but a lack of jail space and funding to care for more inmates has stalled those efforts.

The Union County Council will have two meetings on Thursday to confront the county’s fiscal problems.

First up, the council will have a budget workshop at 9 a.m. to look at the results of the budget cuts it asked Auditor Gene Sanford to make in the proposed 2016 budget.

The council directed Sanford to reduce the 2016 budget to 2015 levels, so council members can decide which, if any, increases can be granted. Cuts of about $900,000 are needed just to reach the 2015 budget amounts, Sanford said.
