SOUTH BEND — Starting today, supper is on the menu at a dozen South Bend schools.

Students in after-school programs with an educational component at Adams, Clay, Riley and Washington high schools, Dickinson Fine Arts Academy, Jackson, Marshall and Navarre intermediate centers and Harrison, Hay, Kennedy and Wilson primary centers all can take advantage of the free daily meals.

Last school year, the program was offered at 10 of the district’s schools.

Victoria Moore, food services director for South Bend schools, said the goal of the program is to increase the opportunities for students to eat a variety of nutritious foods.

Known officially as the Child and Adult Care Food Program, the supper program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Moore said.

“It’s for students in after-school programs that are educationally based,” She said. “So, it could be a play, Spanish Club, training tables (for athletes).”
