LOUISVILLE — The new downtown Ohio River bridge will carry traffic on or before Christmas, Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear announced Monday morning.

An exact date for the opening has not been set and will be announced closer to Dec. 25. Beshear said a public "walk the bridge" event before it opens to auto traffic.

Officials said opening the bridge before Dec. 25 is the goal.

Once two-way traffic opens on the new bridge, $22 million in improvements will begin on Kennedy Bridge. One lane will remain open on the Kennedy Bridge for about a month after the new bridge opens to traffic.

The entire downtown project is supposed to be complete by December 2016.
