HOBART | Southlake Mall has launched a mallwide shopping rewards program it says is a first-of-its-kind for the entire nation.

The super-regional mall at U.S. 30 and Mississippi Street in Hobart is now offering "Oh, So Simple Rewards," which gives shoppers $10 when they spend $250 at any store or restaurant in the mall.

Such rewards programs have grown increasingly common among retailers that seek customer loyalty, but it's usually something offered by individual stores. Starwood rolled out the unique loyalty program, which is one of several changes it's made after buying Southlake Mall and six other malls from previous owner Westfield for $1.6 billion two years ago.

The new owner also installed a virtual river in the center of the mall, and lured retailers that appeal to younger consumers, such as H&M and Forever 21.

Customers don't need a special card to participate in the rewards program. They can enroll up to 15 existing Visa, MasterCard or American Express debit or credit cards as "connected cards" online or at kiosks in the mall. Their mall purchases are tracked through their purchases on their connected cards and paid out to one "registered" card.

They'll also get emails with exclusive offers and be able to log in to their accounts to review their purchases and rewards balances.

Shoppers can use the rewards program at more than 150 stores, including Macy’s, Foot Locker, and Kay Jewelers, as well as at restaurants like Cooper's Hawk Restaurant & Winery.
