SOUTH BEND — Starting next spring, an aerial ropes course with zip lines, walking bridges and tightropes will fill a section of Rum Village Park, a city park that is populated with trees that surpass 100 years old.

A company that started one year ago in South Carolina, Edge Adventures, approached the city early this year as it looked for its first places to run such an aerial adventure course. Owner Steven Doniger, who is originally from Valparaiso, knew of Rum Village.

"South Bend is an extraordinary community," Doniger said, noting the city's train station and its "great reputation for sports and recreation."

The hilly park, at Ewing and Gertrude streets on the city's southwest side, is already popular for its hiking and mountain bike trails, disc golf course and grassy areas that sledders and cross-country skiers like in winter.

And ziplining proved to be an overwhelming hit in May when $5 rides were offered across the St. Joseph River at Howard Park for South Bend's 150th birthday bash.
