Although Caterpillar reported Friday the closing of five plants and cuts of 670 jobs domestically and abroad, the manufacturer spared the Lafayette plant — for now.

Caterpillar, however, will transfer some engine remanufacturing work from its Lafayette plant to the company's hub in Corinth, Mississippi, according to a statement released Friday.

At this time, no layoffs are anticipated in Lafayette as a result, the company stated.

Caterpillar will add about 45 positions over the next few years to facilities in Mississippi as part of the consolidation.

The relocation is part of global restructuring and not all 45 positions come from the Lafayette plant, according to Jamie Fox, a company spokeswoman.

The consolidation follows cost-cutting measures announced last September to slash operating costs in the face of challenging marketplace conditions, according to the statement.
