MUNCIE — While legislators put together a 23-person committee to recommend replacement tests for ISTEP, about 125 community members in Muncie started their own conversation Saturday.

Muncie could have representation in the state committee, which was created in the same legislation that will end ISTEP after 2017. Rep. Greg Beumer, R-Modoc, told The Star Press that he recommended WaTasha Griffin to be a parent representative.

Griffin said she has started the interview process, but nothing is official yet. The committee will be finalized in May.

In the meantime, a group of concerned parents teamed up with the League of Women Voters of Muncie-Delaware County to host a public forum with a panel of legislators, superintendents and Ball State representatives.

Their goal is to collect the communities opinions and turn them into a proposal to present to the committee in August.

The panel didn't really discuss options for replacements, but did spend time rehashing the problems with ISTEP, which should be considered when choosing a replacement.
