It was not a surprising move, but it was still a shock to many.

The Jennings County Chamber of Commerce will soon be no more.

The Chamber's Board of Directors decided to disband the 61-year-old organization on Monday after accepting the resignation of Chamber Director Marie Shepherd.

The reason is simple: declining membership and lack of revenue.

"It was with much emotion and sadness that the board discussed and voted on the dissolution," Shepherd said. "Every effort has been made to continue operating in the best interest of our members. Due to the financial hardship, we can no longer offer the support and provide a needed service to this community. It is time to close our doors."

Like many other businesspeople, realtor Larry Sporleder of Tom Lawson & Associates, a longtime Chamber member, is saddened by the development.

"I hate to see the Chamber close," he said. "It's one more thing leaving town."
