CHESTERTON — The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District has issued a notice that South Shore train riders may face some delays on weekday mid-day trains.

The service advisory states that due to the installation of higher speed crossovers between the Dune Park and Hegewisch stations, commuters may encounter 20- to 30-minute delays on mid-day, non-rush hour trains Monday through Friday through June 30.

NICTD will only issue text and e-mail alerts for any mid-day (non-rush hour) train that is running more than 30 minutes late, according to the advisory. However, they will update the station LED message boards with current delays in excess of 10 minutes.

Commuters are advised to arrive at their departing station at the scheduled time in the event delays are shorter than expected.

Crossovers enable trains to "crossover" from one track to another. Currently trains are required to travel at 15 mph when switching tracks. This upgrade will permit trains to travel at 40 mph improving safety and operational efficiency.
