Brown County property owners will pay more in taxes over the next seven years to support their local schools and the 2,100 students they educate.

A tax referendum passed on Tuesday, with support from 59 percent of the 4,743 voters who cast ballots.

The tax increase, 8 cents for every $100 of assessed property value, totals about $55 a year, or $385 over the seven-year referendum, for a homeowner with property assessed at $150,000.

Every penny of the tax rate will generate about $125,000. One cent’s worth will help keep Brown County Career Resource Center afloat for adult education classes. The rest, $850,000, will go into the school district’s general fund for programs and salaries.
