ELKHART — The Elkhart City Council has approved tax breaks for two firms planning to expand, creating 51 jobs between them.

The council approved the measures — offered to companies to encourage expansion and growth — in unanimous votes on Monday for Shield Restraint Systems and Cleer Vision Tempered Glass.

Shield Restraint Systems will receive a five-year partial property tax abatement for a proposed $11.43 million investment at its location at 3802 Gallatin Way. The abatement will reduce its real and personal property tax load over the period by an estimated $570,226. The company would still be liable for $1.12 million in taxes.
