Those attending SCUFFY’s dinner capping off the 2016 fundraising drive could almost hear the drumroll.
After celebrating the many individuals, businesses and organizations that supported the drive, the big moment arrived - unveiling the grant total raised:
That beats this year’s goal by nearly $18,000.
“It’s probably the best thing I do in this community year in and year out,” said Brent Sandman, assistant chairman of the annual SCUFFY fund drive.
SCUFFY raises money to support 13 local nonprofit agencies serving the people of Shelby County.
Founded in 1955, the first drive held by Shelby County United Fund For You, 126 N. Harrison St., raised a little more than $75,000. The totals have risen steadily since then, surpassing $700,000 for the first time in 2002.
The 60th fund drive in 2014 was the first to exceed $800,000.
Beating this year’s goal of $820,000 was a challenge, said SCUFFY Director Angie Davies.
“Two weeks ago we really didn’t know we were going to make it,” she told the crowd at the end-of-drive dinner held Maxim Events, 1415 E. Michigan Road, Wednesday evening.
