MUNCIE — The city of Muncie is dedicating a new park that features artwork reflecting the growing vibrancy of downtown and its many-sided nature.

Mayor Dennis Tyler says Cornerstone Park replaces what had been "a very ugly corner" at a major entrance to downtown, demonstrates the importance of local arts and culture, and improves the quality of life/place.

"I think it shows a city that's progressive … and uses our local artists as the inspiration to design and present artists' renderings in these parks," he said.

The centerpiece of the park is a colorful artwork called "EXTESS." The appearance of the network of panels changes as you move around the park at Main and Madison streets near Cornerstone Center for the Arts.

"I like that new sculpture … because it's really eye-catching," said R.J. Careins, who stopped to take a photograph of it with his new camera last week. "I like these alliums …It really stands out and matches the other park."

Allium is a bulb that produces balls of Bearcat purple flowers on top of long, leafless stalks. They line the perimeter of the park and extend south on Madison to border Firemens Park.
