General Motors is requesting a five-year, 100 percent tax abatement on new machinery and new equipment, according to Marion City Councilman Don Batchelor, and GM says the tax abatement will retain at least 120 jobs.

The Marion Common Council Development Committee unanimously passed the request onto consideration for the next council meeting, set for June 21, Batchelor, committee chairman, said.

Batchelor said the updated equipment will help GM continue to expand its services globally.

“I think it’s a fantastic investment for the community,” Batchelor said. “We’re just happy that they (General Motors) continue to invest in our community.”
