Indiana University was one of nearly 100 colleges and universities that had at least 10 reports of rape on their main campuses in 2014, according to a recent analysis of United States Department of Education data by the Washington Post.

Brown University and the University of Connecticut were at the top of the list with 43 reports each, while IU had 13. That number put IU ahead of all but two Indiana colleges and universities listed in the analysis. The University of Notre Dame had the most reports in Indiana with 15, followed by Ball State University with 14. After IU, Vincennes University was fourth on the list with eight reports.

In the Big Ten, IU was near the middle of the pack. Rutgers University had the most in the conference with 32, followed by Ohio State with 20, the University of Wisconsin with 17 and the University of Michigan with 14. In addition to IU, there were 13 rapes reported at the University of Iowa and Michigan State University.

When the number of students on each campus is taken into account, IU was also near the middle.

At IU, 0.3 rapes were reported for every 1,000 students. In the Big Ten, six other institutions had the same proportion of rapes reported per 1,000 students. Rutgers had the largest rate at 0.7 while the University of Minnesota and Northwestern University tied for the smallest rate at 0.1.

Compared with other universities and colleges within the state, IU ranked 13th out of 32. Franklin College was at the top of the Indiana list with 2.8 rapes reported per 1,000 students. No rapes were reported at 15 colleges and universities in Indiana.

Out of more than 1,300 colleges and universities included in the analysis, about 500 had no reports of rape, but that’s not necessarily a good thing.
