The Obama administration is reaching out to key regions throughout the nation for clean energy innovation — and Indiana is up to the challenge.
Purdue University hosted a Midwest forum Thursday that continues Friday that will help guide the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Regional Clean Energy Innovation Partnerships that aim to support clean energy research and development specific to individual regions.
The program is part of "Mission Innovation," a global effort established last year when 20 countries, including the U.S., committed to doubling their funding for clean energy over the next five years.
"We recognize that those of us sitting in Washington really can’t pull all of this off on our own," said Franklin Orr, DOE under secretary for science and energy, at the forum. "We need all of you and we need as many talented people as we can get on the field."
The $110 million proposed plan is highlighted in President Barack Obama's energy budget for Fiscal Year 2017, which calls for $7.7 billion in discretionary funding for clean energy research and development. That's 20 percent higher than the FY 2016 funding level.
