MUNCIE — The city has a new historic preservation plan that not only emphasizes preservation but encourages identification of more neighborhoods and more structures as historic.

The plan, posted on the city's website, proposes the creation of more historic districts and seeks protection for some 50-year-old structures that could be slated for demolition.

After noting that the historic preservation plan "identifies Muncie's cultural and historic resources" and works with the Muncie Action Plan, the new historic preservation plan advocates the cultural, environmental and economic benefits of historic preservation. The plan notes the efforts of the ScoutMuncie group, which has collected information about the condition of 40 percent of the city.

The plan notes initiatives that have been tried in other cities that could work in Muncie, including "competitions" to find new uses for vacant lots.
