SOUTH BEND — Brown Mackie College students will make new plans after learning the South Bend campus is no longer enrolling new students and eventually will close.

Haley Van Buskirk, a 21-year-old student from Plymouth, said Monday she is hopeful she'll be able to complete her associate's degree in veterinary technology at Brown Mackie. She enrolled last December and expects to finish her degree by the end of 2017.

Van Buskirk said she's been satisfied so far with the for-profit college.

Two other veterinarian technology students, who declined to give their names, said they plan to look at other colleges and transfer.

"I'm going to try to find another school that offers this program," one student said.

They said they think many other students also will seek to transfer.

The campus director on Monday declined to talk with the South Bend Tribune, referring all questions to the college's corporate headquarters. South Bend campus leaders scheduled two meetings Monday with students to provide information and answer questions about the future.

Brown Mackie parent Education Management Corp. announced on Friday it would stop enrolling new students at 22 of the school's 26 campuses, including the campuses in South Bend, Michigan City, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Merrillville. Those campuses eventually will close.

"We will not close until all current students have completed their programs of study," Education Management Corp. spokesman Bob Greenlee said Monday from Chicago. That means classes will continue at the South Bend campus at least through June 2018, he said.
