GOSHEN — A new organization is hoping to connect Latinos with the community at large through a new radio station broadcasting from downtown Goshen.

Tune in to 96.5 FM Radio Horizonte, and in the next few days you’ll hear music both in English and Spanish. Shows focusing on the community, it’s people and culture will begin airing on Wednesday.

The goal is to reach out to both the English and Spanish-speaking communities, but also to ensure the Latino community that only speaks Spanish gets the most up-to-date informatoon on what’s happening in the schools and local government.

Manuel Cortez, president of the radio station and organization Latinos Pro Education, said this is the work of a lifetime coming to fruition.

When Cortez arrived to the U.S. from El Salvador 27 years ago, he saw opportunities he would have never had in his impoverished homeland. Since living in Goshen over 17 years now, with a home and his family, Cortez has worked to pay it forward, so he started Latinos Pro Education as a nonprofit and applied for a radio license four years ago.

“I came to the conclusion that I’ve received so much from this country that I thought of helping others in my community,” he said. “I believe I’m living the American Dream. This country has shown me that you can do anything if you work hard enough, and that’s what motivates me to continue fighting for those who don’t have a voice.”
