GE employees were notified today that the Bloomington plant would be closing.

"The company's proposal is subject to company-union negotiations, which are expected to begin this week," the company news release said. "If the proposal becomes final, the SXS models made at Bloomington would be phased out and no longer manufactured."

The plant employs 329 people — 28 salaried employees and 301 union hourly-paid employees. If the plant closes, 94 percent of the employees would be eligible to retire with comprehensive pension and health coverage, according to the news release.

“A significant plant closing like this sends a ripple effect through the community, but of course our immediate thoughts and concerns are with the GE Appliances employees and their families. We will encourage the company to provide the fullest support possible for each employee losing their position.

We anticipate further conversations about connecting employees with resources going forward.” stated Mayor Hamilton.
