ATTICA — Attica Consolidated School Corp. Treasurer Carrie Brier resigned from her post Monday in apparent fallout from an audit that blasted the school district's financial record-keeping.

She will vacate the office effective immediately, according to Superintendent Derek Marshall.

Brier is at the center of an audit that exposed the apparent misreporting of nearly $1 million in funds.

Brier has worked as the school treasurer since 1990. According to the Indiana State Board of Accounts, discrepancies in the school's records began in 2008.

State Rep. Sharon Negele, R-Attica, said the audit's findings don't equate to missing funds.

"I knew right away," said Negele, who used to serve at the town's clerk-treasurer. "It’s not that the money is missing. It just didn’t get accounted properly."

Negele said there are not a lot of resources for treasurers, especially in rural areas, and often officials are underpaid and overworked. Accounting software can be opaque and officials are often left to muddle through alone, Negele added.
