ELKHART — A local company is seeking to invest $8.5 million in an expansion plan that will add 20 jobs by the end of 2020.

The Elkhart City Council passed a resolution allowing Alpha Systems at 5120 Beck Drive to continue the process of seeking a five-year tax abatement during the phase-in period of the expansion project.

Formed in 1984, the company manufactures and distributes construction products and accessories to the recreational vehicle, marine and manufactured housing industries. Alpha Systems currently employs 320 individuals at an average wage of $18 per hour.

Expansion plans call for the construction of a $1.5 million, 25,000-square-foot addition to the existing headquarters on Beck Drive, according to city documents. The addition would be utilized for manufacturing and warehousing. Alpha Systems would invest another $7 million in manufacturing and information technology equipment, according to city documents.

Abby Wiles, assistant director for community, economic and redevelopment for the city, said the company meets the requirements for a five-year tax abatement based on a score sheet city economic development officials use to determine whether companies qualify for the tax abatement program.
