INDIANAPOLIS — An education bill sponsored by State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) to survey Indiana schools about cursive writing passed the Senate yesterday by a vote of 41-5.

Senate Bill 29 will require the Indiana Department of Education to survey elementary and secondary school administrators and teachers about whether they are for or against mandating cursive writing.

“Being able to write in cursive is a life skill everyone should have, including elementary-aged children,” Leising said. “This bill will allow teachers and administrators to voice their opinions on the subject, and I am eager to hear their thoughts on cursive writing.”

SB 29 will also require all eligible public schools to include a semester-long Indiana studies elective course in their high school curriculums. Leising added that too many students are not knowledgeable about their home state of Indiana.

The bill will now be sent to Gov. Eric Holcomb for final consideration.
