The building that once housed the Second Story nightclub is set to grow two more now that the Bloomington Plan Commission has approved a two-story addition meant to take 201 S. College Ave. to the next level.

Petitioner Tariq Khan and project architect Matt Ellenwood brought plans for 10 one-bedroom apartments atop Serendipity Martini Bar before the city Monday night. The 0.15-acre project will require some significant structural amendments before it locates on top of the 1948 structure that houses the martini bar.

“This is a challenging building to do this to,” Ellenwood said. “It looks easy in the pictures, but there are some significant structural upgrades that will have to happen.”

In addition to those upgrades, the petitioner will have to deliver on its plan to bring 24 solar panels, at $1,000 each, to the roof of the structure on the southeast corner of West Fourth Street and South College Avenue. The continuation of the building’s art moderne style will also call for additional limestone and stucco building materials.

Although city staff recommended continuing the project to the July 10 plan commission meeting so that the city administration and the developer could discuss affordable housing considerations, commission members unanimously voted to go ahead and fast-track the proposal, moving it on for city council review.
