SOUTH BEND — The South Bend Community School Corp. agreed to pay the district's former human resources and legal director $42,000 to step down, according to a copy of the agreement.

Cheryl Greene, an attorney who previously worked for the city of South Bend for about 14 years, took the position with the school corporation in late 2014.

According to an "employment separation agreement," Greene agreed to resign, effective Feb. 24, in exchange for payouts totaling just more than $42,000 in 10 installments.

Though the agreement described Greene's resignation as taking effect in February, it was not signed until sometime after May 11, when she received a copy from the corporation, according to the document.

The exact reasons for her departure are unclear, though the agreement said the position of human resources director had been restructured so that it no longer required a licensed attorney.

Green performed dual functions, heading the human resources department but also serving as the corporation's in-house legal counsel. The corporation outsources much of its legal work to Faegre Baker & Daniels, a large firm.
