When Mike Gruszka, of the Lowell Redevelopment Commission, and those on the signage committee noticed last summer there was a variety of town signs, he suggested the Town Council look at developing its own brand.

He wanted to find a look for Lowell that would be consistent throughout, Gruszka said.

Now, the town's new logo is on the new water tower at Freedom Park.

Lowell Town Council President LeAnn Angerman, R-2nd, recently announced the logo addition to the tower, visible for miles. It is the second public display of the logo, which was unveiled in May at Moose Park.

On two sides of the water tower, in deep earth tones, the town seal shows a rising sun over verdant land. It is accompanied by the words "Town of Lowell, Cultivating Community."

It was time to put a new welcoming face on their south Lake County town, council members said after Gruszka's presentation in July. He sits on the council representing Ward 1 as a Democrat. His committee began gathering ideas for the branding of Lowell and invited professionals to present ideas.

In October, Julie Olthoff of Via Marketing, Merrillville, whose team designed the selected logo, said a logo creates an identity using colors and shapes so it is easily recognized as Lowell whether seen on town vehicles, the website, water towers, stationery or general signage.

Adding the logo to the water tower cost an additional $10,497.

The million-gallon spheroid water tower is not yet online. Interim Public Works Director Kevin Gray said it is slated to be operational this month. There is electrical work to be completed by NIPSCO which will determine when it can go online.
