LAFAYETTE — An amendment to Tippecanoe County's Unified Zoning Ordinance went before City Councils in Lafayette and West Lafayette Monday and before the County Commissioners.

The ordinance regulates the rental of transient guest houses and rooms, like those rented through services like Airbnb. The central restriction of the ordinance is one that requires property owners renting unoccupied guest houses to receive a special exception from the Board of Zoning Appeals.

The ordinance has gone through several iterations, loosening the restrictions on transient rentals originally proposed by the Area Plan Commission.

Lafayette City Council and Tippecanoe County Commissioners passed the measure.

“I think what we ended up with was a good thing,” said  county commissioner Tom Murtaugh.

Lafayette City Council member Perry Brown was the only council member to vote against the ordinance.
