Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch will assist Smithville in launching a half-million-dollar fiber expansion in Ellettsville Thursday — a move that will bring gigabit internet to more than 450 homes.

Crouch will ceremonially operate fiber installation equipment to mark the beginning of a $500,000 Smithville installation in the Prominence Pointe neighborhood at 4711 N. Palisade Drive. According to a press release, the project will bring symmetrical fiber internet service of around 1,000 megabits-per-second to 456 homes. A ceremony in which Crouch will operate a full-scale boring machine to drive fiber into the ground will launch the project at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Smithville first began its $90 million fiber conversion project in Ellettsville in 2008.
