ELKHART— Plans to construct a 205 unit luxury apartment complex in downtown Elkhart are moving forward after a pair of actions taken by the city last week. The complex has been named Stonewater at the Riverwalk.

On Thursday, the city’s Redevelopment Commission approved design plans on the luxury apartment project, including building materials and aesthetic designs.

Later that same evening, the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals approved a use variance that will allow developer Flaherty & Collins Properties to construct ground floor residential units as part of the complex.

Flaherty & Collins Vice President of Development Brian Prince said he is “excited” to see the project progress, one that started in July 2014.

“It’s been an uphill battle at times, but everyone has seen us through to the finish line,” Prince said. “We’re happy about that. We’re excited to see progress coming out of the ground.”

The next step in the process involves the transference of bonds from the city to the developer, after which construction can begin.
