LIBERTY – If grant administrator Mike Klenpeter could have offered Union County money for a jail or new kennels for the dog pound, he might have been able to convince Union County commissioners that the county needs an income study that could help the county win grants for local projects.

Union County Economic Development Director Melissa Browning told commissioners this week that the town of Liberty participated in  an income study resulting in a grant that might make the town eligible for further grants to tackle some of its needs.

The last time Union County had such studies done was in 1969, when the Corps of Engineers was building Brookville Lake , which opened in 1975.

At that time, Liberty residents wanted help in directing traffic around the town instead of to going through the town, Browning said. (That would not be the view now, she added.)

The town of Liberty participated in an income survey and has qualified for $40,000 grant through the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) to continue looking at needs and opportunities for the town.
