MUNCIE — Opponents of plans for a 10,000-hog farm in northern Delaware County shouldn't expect county officials to take action to put the brakes on the project.

That's because there's no immediate issue going before the commissioners to vote on, but also because commissioners James King, Sherry Riggin and Shannon Henry told The Star Press they're more likely to push for regulation of confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) than a moratorium.

"The farmers are just like any business," King said. "They have to look at ways to fund their farms or the farms will go away. I'm looking at options to help regulate things and move on."

Rhett Light, a Hartford City resident, has informed neighbors near his property at 2601 W. Delaware County Road 1270-North he plans to build a wean-to-finish hog farm with four buildings for 2,640 pigs each.

Neighbors immediately raised concerns about the smell and runoff from manure produced by all the hogs as well as the impact on property values in the area.
