Bloomington region named among top growing bioscience sectors

Biotechnology Innovation Organization and TEConomy Partners highlighted the Bloomington metropolitan statistical area's (MSA) life sciences prowess in its latest report, "Investment, Innovation and Job Creation in a Growing U.S. Bioscience Industry." The report measures growth across several bioscience sectors from 2014 to 2016 and heralded the area encompassing Monroe and Owen counties for its employment concentration in the medical devices and equipment category. 

“Indiana’s life sciences industry continues to be a national leader, especially when it comes to employment, industry concentration and patents,” David L. Johnson, president and CEO of life sciences organization BioCrossroads, said in a news release. “This report showcases the sector’s strength as a truly shared Indiana asset — from our large cities to our smaller communities and from research and development to manufacturing and distribution.”

For the past three years, the Bloomington MSA has ranked first for specialized employment concentration in the medical devices and equipment category among regions with total private employment of less than 75,000. Across the nation, that same region ranked 20th for the same category.
