In a 2-0 vote, the Allen County commissioners approved a rezoning petition Friday for a 89-lot single-family development on Schwartz Road.

Commissioners Therese Brown and Nelson Peters both supported the rezoning Friday. Commissioner Linda Bloom was absent.

During the commissioners' May 11 meeting, a related rezoning petition for a 65-lot rental duplex development was voted down. A motion to approve the rezoning for the single-family homes failed during that meeting for lack of a second.

Friday was the last day the commissioners could vote on the petition before it was automatically approved, Peters said, adding the commissioners had promised nearby residents that a vote would be held.

“It's very disappointing that there are only two commissioners to weigh in on this today,” Peters said. “We had pushed it off one time because there were only two commissioners, and we felt we really needed to have three here.”
