The proposed Mounds Lake reservoir would be little more than a deep puddle in much of Delaware County, according to some newly-released estimates.

Although the reservoir would be deeper in Madison County, where a dam across White River would create the proposed reservoir, water depths in Delaware County would be as little as two feet in many spots.

According to a new water elevation map released to The Star Press by Delaware County's GIS office, the reservoir could also create problems for drainage in areas near Yorktown where there's no visible reservoir.

"It's very much an approximation," Kyle Johnson, director of Delaware County GIS, told The Star Press about his office's projections. "But we feel it's pretty accurate.

"Obviously it's going to get deeper as you get to Interstate 69, but it's still relatively shallow," Johnson added.

The map — actually a series of maps and drawings — comes just as Anderson's Center for Economic Development, which proposed the miles-long, 2,100-acre reservoir, is preparing to go to Delaware and Madison county officials for creation of a Mounds Lake Commission. The commission would oversee the years-long construction of the reservoir.
