The closure of Pearson Education Ltd.’s massive distribution center in Lebanon will affect more workers than originally expected, the company says.
In a letter this month to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development posted Thursday by the state, Pearson said 209 employees will lose their jobs at the facility. That’s up from the 160 the company expected when it first announced the closure in December.
Pearson, the education-publishing subsidiary of London-based Pearson PLC, said the 1.2 million-square-foot facility at 135 S. Mt. Zion Road will close Feb. 28.
The company said 123 of the 209 distribution employees took a voluntary severance package that was offered to them.
Some of the distribution work is being transferred to Cranbury, N.J., and to a distribution center at 5550 W. 74th St. in Indianapolis.
Pearson blamed the closure on a decline in the traditional textbook-publishing business.
