The operator of the Indiana Toll Road has entered into agreements with two companies to build and manage its eight travel plazas along the toll road.

ITR Concession Company has contracted with Sunoco and HMSHost to build and operate the plazas, including a pair in Portage.

ITR CEO Ken Daley said the plazas will offer motorists a "great welcome to Indiana."

“We are happy to provide ITR customers with these travel plaza improvements which, along with our PUSH project, are investments in safety, customer service, and Indiana,” he said.

The $70 million plaza project includes the demolition and rebuilding of the four pairs of travel plaza buildings in Portage, Rolling Prairie, Elkhart and Howe.

An additional project, the $200 million 80/90 PUSH project, includes road and bridge rehabilitation between Portage and Elkhart. It has already started.

Sunoco will be the sole operator of the Portage and Elkhart locations, which will be rebuilt into fuel and convenience stores. Sunoco will also operate the fuel stations at the Rolling Prairie and Howe locations, which will be rebuilt into full-service plazas with HMSHost operating and managing the restaurant facilities.

This year's travel plaza work is scheduled to begin in July and last through fall. It includes demolition and construction of the Portage travel plazas.
