MUNCIE — A new jail could cost $100,000 or more per inmate bed, Delaware County officials heard Monday.

"It's a lot of money," Commissioner Shannon Henry told The Star Press after hearing from the latest company that wants to be considered if and when the county builds a new jail.

It definitely is a lot of money: At that per-bed amount, a 500-bed jail would cost $50 million.

The Delaware County commissioners on Monday heard from Jack Krause, president of Construction Control Inc., a Fort Wayne construction management company.

Krause, who did not make a formal pitch to build a new local jail, gave the second presentation this month to the commissioners about a new jail. Garmong Construction representatives talked to the commissioners on Sept. 5.
