All systems are go for the inaugural flight of Allegiant airline at Gary/Chicago International Airport on Wednesday, according to Airport Interim Director Steve Landry.

Flight 650 is scheduled to take off at 3:20 p.m. and land at Orlando Sanford International Airport, in Florida, at 6:50 p.m., according to Allegiant airline's online schedule.

Landry said there have been a few small terminal improvements in preparation for the airline, including more electrical outlets and upgrades to its Wi-Fi for passengers who want to use laptops there.

The flights were announced in mid-December at a meeting of the Gary/Chicago International Airport authority, when the board voted to waive some airport fees for the airline.

On Wednesday, airport and city officials plan to hold a celebration in recognition of the inaugural flight starting at 1:30 p.m. The South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority and the City of Gary are aiding in putting on that event, Landry said.

After Wednesday, flights will depart Gary at noon every Sunday, starting Feb. 19, and at noon Thursday, starting Feb. 23. Departures from Orlando Sanford International to Gary will be at 9:45 a.m. on the same days.

Allegiant flies from more than 75 small and midsize U.S. cities to high-profile tourist destinations like Orlando/Sanford in Florida.
