Ind. 37 lanes closing for erosion control
Single-lane closures on Ind. 37 from 2 miles north of Sample Road to just north of Liberty Church Road were scheduled to begin on or after Monday, weather permitting. They are expected to continue through August. The lanes are being closed to install temporary erosion control features.
Single-lane closures at Vernal Pike, 17th Street
Intermittent, single-lane closures on Vernal Pike and 17th Street were scheduled to begin Monday, weather permitting, to allow Duke Energy to relocate existing utility facilities. The lane closures on Vernal Pike will be from Woodyard Road to Ind. 37, and on 17th Street from Crescent Road to Lismore Drive. The closures are expected to continue through late July.
Kinser Pike, between Ind. 37 and Bayles Road, is scheduled to be closed on or after June 22 for overpass construction. Traffic will be detoured via Acuff Road and Ind. 37 during construction. Local access will be permitted. The closure is expected to continue until the end of the year.
Vernal Pike, west of Ind. 37, will be closed from Woodyard Road to Industrial Drive on or after June 29 until the end of the year or early 2016 for overpass construction and roadway improvements. Traffic will be detoured via Curry Pike, Ind. 46 and Ind. 37 during construction and open to local traffic only. The existing traffic signal at Ind. 37 with access to Industrial Drive will remain open until the new Vernal Pike roadway and overpass are completed and open to traffic. Access to Packing House Road will be via Vernal Pike to the west during Phase 1 construction and via Ind. 37 and Industrial Drive during Phase 2 construction.
Fullerton Pike, between Sharon Drive to the west and Rockport Road to the east, is scheduled to be closed on or after July 11 and remain closed through Dec. 31. The road is being closed so I-69 Development Partners can construct a full interchange for Interstate 69. Detours will be in place to direct motorists to Monroe Hospital. Southbound Ind. 37 traffic will be directed to That Road west of Ind. 37 to Medical Park Boulevard. Northbound Ind. 37 traffic will be detoured to That Road east of Ind. 37 to the new That Road connector to Rockport Road to That Road west of Ind. 37 and then to Medical Park Boulevard. This section of Fullerton Pike will not be closed until the Rockport Road overpass is complete and open to traffic. Local traffic will be allowed to access this section of Fullerton Pike during the closure.

In the next few weeks, several road closures expected to last at least until the end of the year will begin.
Those closures, along with a few others that won’t last as long, are necessary to allow I-69 Development Partners to convert the 21 miles of Ind. 37 from Bloomington to Martinsville into Interstate 69. The goal is to have the entire project completed by the end of 2016.
That means several roads will close and lanes will shift at the same time, but I-69 Development Partners is hoping to minimize traffic issues.
“As with any construction, there will be a few inconveniences and headaches along the way,” said Brad Faris, traffic manager. “But the hope is once it’s done it will be a much improved system.”
Many of those improvements involve replacing stoplights on Ind. 37 through Bloomington with overpasses and interchanges. One of those interchanges will be the intersection of Ind. 37 and Fullerton Pike near Monroe Hospital.
Fullerton Pike, from Sharon Drive on the west side of Ind. 37 to Rockport Road on the east side of Ind. 37, is scheduled to be closed on or after July 11 and remain closed through Dec. 31. The road will not close until after the Rockport Road overpass is completed, according to a news release from I-69 Development Partners. The overpass, along with a new connector for That Road, will be part of the detour route.
