BROOKVILLE — Gov. Mitch Daniels joined executives from MBC Group Wednesday to announce the company’s plans to expand its local operations, creating up to 101 new jobs by 2014.

Daniels had already been scheduled to be in Brookville to discuss his new book Wednesday but he combined that trip with an economic development announcement at MBC Group.

The company’s workforce is about 10 now. MBC has moved into the former J&J Packaging building at 9021 Indiana 101 at the north edge of Brookville. The building was last used by J&J as a warehouse.

MBC Group will invest $4.1 million to add four new thermoforming plastic production lines at the company’s 30,000 square-foot facility. It will expand its digital printing operations that are currently outsourced with the addition of printing, kitting and fulfillment for point-of-purchase materials. When the new production lines are operational, the company projects to handle more than $10 million of packaging, digitally printed materials and contract labor for its customers annually.

MBC Group Packaging Solutions Division is led by people who have been leaders in contract packaging and point of purchase sales, said Eric Holloway, company president.

“Our short-term strategy plan is to market to existing relationship where we are very well known and respected,” he said. “Our structure allows us to offer products and services while being more competitive than others in the market place. A good portion of the contract packaging world is labor intensive, because of Indiana’s favorable labor climate, we will be able to keep costs down while being able to supply acceptable wages for our workers.

The packing solutions division has been involved at J&J Packaging and they are experts in their field, Holloway said.

The challenge for a new business is finding capital before receipts for goods begin coming in. It’s especially tough in a down economy, he said. The company has been helped by the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

Daniels recalled riding his motorcycle in the Brookville Bicentennial parade in 2008, the first of several bicentennials coming to the state in coming years.

The IEDC has offered MBC up to $625,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $100,00 in training grants based on the company’s job creation plans. The tax credits are performance-based and are provided only when Hoosiers are hired.

The Brookville Town Council will consider property tax abatement applications from the company.
