A massive 1.2 million-square-foot John Deere warehouse, off Interstate 65 near Lowell, is expected to employ hundreds of construction workers. Here's what you need to know:
• The Moline, Illinois-based tractor and agricultural equipment manufacturer recently announced it had broken ground for the project. It will distribute John Deere parts around the country for a number of industries.
• Preliminary site work has begun, said Randy Palmateer, business manager of the Northwestern Indiana Building and Construction Trades Council.
• Amazon's 1-million-square-foot warehouse in Merrillville is presently the largest single building ever constructed in Lake County, where massive steel mills are campuses rather than single buildings under one roof. The Amazon project employed around 500 construction workers, and the John Deere project will employ at least that many, Palmateer said.
• The $125 million project on a 234-acre site on 181st Avenue near I-65 will require many skilled tradesmen to complete.
• John Deere, a Fortune 100 company, has pledged to invest $20 billion in the United States over the next decade, including in the new distribution center between Lowell and Hebron.
