Think of memorable natural disasters: hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, the Joplin, Mo., tornado last year, and the drought of 2012.

Well, the drought is memorable to Hoosiers at least, and its effects will be felt around the world.

Thirty-six Indiana counties, including Carroll County, made the Department of Agriculture’s primary natural disaster list published Thursday, and 19 counties adjacent to the drought counties — Clinton, Tippecanoe and White among them — also qualify for natural disaster assistance.

Farmers in those 55 counties are eligible to apply for low-interest loans — 2.25 percent instead of the current rate of 3.75 percent. Farmers can contact a Farm Service Agency office for specific information about the loans and other relief, according to the Department of Agriculture.
