Ivy Tech Community College has seen such a large increase in fall enrollment compared with last year that its vice provost for student affairs, Benjamin Young, has written a letter that offers suggestions to those who haven't yet enrolled in fall classes but are planning to register.
According to the college, as of Wednesday, Ivy Tech's enrollment was a record 106,644, an increase of more than 20,000 students, or 24.3 percent, from 2008. The combined rate of enrollment for all Ivy Tech campuses was nearly 2,000 students a day.
At Ivy Tech Community College Northeast in Fort Wayne, enrollment was 11,351 as of Tuesday, an increase of more than 33 percent from 8,489 reported at the same time last year, said Edward Reed, executive director of marketing and communications.
In his letter, which is posted online at www.ivytech.edu, Young wrote, "Due to the significant increase in Fall enrollment, you may have found it challenging to get in to classes at times and locations you prefer or could not enroll in a class at all due to that class being full."
For those still planning on registering for classes, Young encouraged them to:
* Check Ivy Tech's online registration to see if desired classes have become available, and add their names to waiting lists at the local campus, if available.
* Register for classes that start later in the fall term, including eight- and 10-week courses.
* Consider enrolling in equivalent online classes.
* And check if the desired class is available at another campus or off-site learning center.
In his letter, Young cautioned students should pay their tuition by Monday in order to prevent being dropped from classes for which they've registered.
