Go online and learn all sorts of things about crime in your world. Public databases track sex offenders, violent felons, prisoner locations and release dates, criminal charges filed and more.

And now, the public can check a state website for information about clandestine methamphetamine laboratories before they purchase a home, rent an apartment, buy a car or check into a motel room.

Maintained by Indiana State Police with records dating back to 2007, the new “meth lab location” database and map also list dump sites where police have discovered meth labs left out in the open, descriptions of the chemicals and equipment found and manufacturing methods.

Starting July 1, House Enrolled Act No. 1141 will mandate meth lab disclosures in property transactions and require the state police to update its meth lab website.

ISP 1st Sgt. Niki Crawford estimated up to a third of the clandestine meth labs state police have encountered do not appear on the database. They already have been cleaned and have a “Certificate of Illegal Drug Lab Cleanup” from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

A state law in effect since 2007 requires police agencies that discover meth inside residences to notify the county health department, which then posts a notice on the door of the house, mobile home or apartment condemning the home and saying it cannot be occupied until it is detoxified and gets clearance from the state.
